My gosh it’s hot in here

This is for everyone, whether or not you’re on my side (my side being that anyone who thinks global warming is nothing to worry about/isn’t happening/isn’t caused by us should wake up and smell the whiskey).

Examine this table:

Global warming table

For the moment, forget all about having control of the happens/doesn’t happen issue. By ‘happen’, I mean continues in the manner in which it is generally thought of. Just focus on the action. That’s something we can definitely control.

If we do nothing at all, then we are gambling on things working out to everything described in the green box. That’s a box that most scienfitic evidence and 90% of the scientific community agree is not going to happen. So in all likelihood, following the ‘do nothing’ route, we’re going to end up with the red box. Does that look good to you?

It’s only money. Whether you believe it’s something to worry about or not, isn’t it worth trying to stay on the safe side? It’s not hard to do what you can. Recycle. Turn the light off. Little things like that. You won’t save the planet, but if everyone did those things then it would make a difference, and let’s face it: it’s the only difference that, on an individual basis, we can make.

You seem to think a lot about some very important issues. In this way I think you are similar to me and I am almost sorry for you because I know that it probably never ends, either. This is true for me and I spend much to much of my time worrying about “the larger issues” — issues over which I really haven’t any control.

I’m not saying that it’s pointless to ponder these things, just a hefty burden. But someone has to do it, right? Keep thinking deeply, maybe someday there will be enough of us to affect a real change.
